Overview

What it is, who it's for and why it matters.

What it is

Roofing covers pitched-roof re-coverage (slate or tile), flat-roof systems (GRP, EPDM, single-ply), new-build roof structures, flashings, leadwork, fascias, soffits, guttering and storm-damage repair. We strip, repair and re-cover entire roofs and we patch one slipped slate, both jobs done properly.

Who it's for

Homeowners with ageing roofs (most pitched roofs in Greater Manchester are now 50–80 years old), landlords managing portfolios, insurance claimants needing competent repair after storm damage, and developers and main contractors needing a trusted sub-contract roofer.

When you need it

A roof inspection every 5–7 years is sensible; any later than that and small failings (slipped tiles, perished pointing, blocked gutters) have become large ones. After any named storm, a same-week inspection saves five-figure interior damage bills.

Why professional help matters

Water ingress damages plaster, joists, electrical wiring and insurance premiums in that order. Cheap repairs accelerate the failure rather than fix it. The right system, installed to manufacturer's spec, lasts 25–50 years; the wrong one lasts a winter.

What goes wrong

The failures we are most often asked to put right.

Roofing scams are the most common building scam reported in Greater Manchester. The signs are predictable.

01

Door-knocker 'we noticed your roof'

Legitimate roofers do not cold-call. The repair quoted on the doorstep is rarely what you actually need, and never in writing.

02

Repair on top of failure

Re-cementing a ridge that has lost its mortar bed three times means the ridge tile needs mechanically fixing. Each new layer of mortar buys six months.

03

Wrong flat-roof system

Mineral felt on a low-fall garage roof failing every 8–10 years gets replaced with the same mineral felt. GRP or EPDM lasts 25+ years for a comparable cost.

04

No photographic record

Without before-and-after photos, you cannot prove what was done, and you cannot claim against a guarantee that was never written.

Our process

A clear, repeatable system, from first visit to final sign-off.

  1. Step 1

    Free roof inspection

We attend, photograph from ground and (where safe) from the roof, identify failure points and explain whether you need repair, partial recovering or full re-roof.

  2. Step 2

    Written quote & specification

Materials named (e.g. Marley Modern or Redland Cambrian slate, GRP topcoat make), warranty length and method statement, all fixed-price in writing.

  3. Step 3

    Scaffold & prep

Independent scaffold erected to working-platform standard. Existing covering stripped, battens and felt assessed, structural rafters checked.

  4. Step 4

    Re-cover & detailing

New breather membrane, treated counter-battens, new battens, new slates or tiles, fresh leadwork at all abutments, mechanically fixed ridge and verge.

  5. Step 5

    Sign-off & handover

Photographic handover pack with stage-by-stage images, written guarantee, gutter and downpipe inspection complete. Scaffold struck within 5 working days.

Why work with Renovo

Concrete outcomes, not vague promises.

Longevity

A correctly stripped and re-covered pitched roof lasts 50+ years. GRP flat roof 25 years. EPDM 30+. Designed against manufacturer's spec, not the cheapest local merchant's stock.

Storm response

Same-day or next-day attendance after named storms across Salford, Manchester, Bolton and Wigan. Tarp and make safe before insurer assessment.

Insurance-ready paperwork

Photographic record of damage, written method statement, invoice with materials listed, accepted by every major UK home insurer.

Energy efficiency

Modern breather membranes, ventilated ridge and eave detailing and PIR insulation lift loft U-values and reduce heating bills.

Tidy site

Skips on site no longer than necessary. Drives swept daily. Magnetic nail-sweep on final clean-down.

Written guarantee

Workmanship guarantee on every job. Manufacturer warranty stacked on top for materials.

Pitched roof systems

We re-cover pitched roofs in natural slate (Welsh, Spanish, Brazilian), reconstituted slate (Marley Eternit Cambrian, Redland Cambrian), concrete tile (Marley Modern, Redland Mini Stonewold) and clay plain tile or pantile. Membrane is breathable (Tyvek or equivalent) over treated battens; ridges and verges are mechanically fixed dry systems where current Building Regs require it.

Flat roof systems

Three mainstream systems and we install all three. GRP (glass-reinforced polyester), laid-in-situ, 25-year manufacturer warranty, ideal for extension flat roofs and dormer tops. EPDM single-ply rubber, laid as one piece, 30+ year design life, lowest-maintenance system on the market. Single-ply PVC for larger commercial flat roofs. We never use mineral felt as a primary system on new work.

Leadwork, flashings and abutments

Every roof failure starts at a junction. We use Code 4 and Code 5 lead at chimney and wall abutments, soakers and step-flashings dressed by hand, lead-clipped at correct centres. Patination oil applied to prevent run-off staining. Where lead is banned by listed building or specification, we use lead-substitute aluminium alloy.

Storm damage & insurance repair

After Storm Eowyn, Babet and similar named events, we operate a 24-hour response across Greater Manchester. Initial visit makes safe (tarps, broken-tile recover, gutter clearance), photographs damage for the insurer, then quotes the permanent repair. We work directly with most major insurers as approved repairer.

FAQ

Straight answers to the questions clients actually ask.

Still got a question? Call us on 07701 078833 or request a callback.

How much does a new roof cost in Salford?+

A typical 3-bed semi full strip-and-re-cover in concrete tile runs £6,500–£9,500 including scaffold and new leadwork. Natural slate adds 25–40%. Always after a free site visit, no doorstep quotes.

How long will a re-roof take?+

Typical 3-bed semi: 4–6 working days for the strip-and-recover, plus scaffold erection and dismantling either side. Larger or detached roofs run 7–10 working days.

How do I know if I need a full re-roof or just a repair?+

If the underlying felt has perished, mortar bedding has failed across multiple ridges, or 20%+ of slates are slipped/cracked, a re-cover is more economic than rolling repairs. We tell you straight after inspection.

What guarantees come with the work?+

New roofs and re-roofs carry a 25-year workmanship guarantee, plus manufacturer warranties on materials (typically 25 years on GRP, 30+ on EPDM, 50+ on slate). All issued at handover. Damage caused by third parties or weather events is assessed separately.

Do you do roof repairs and emergency call-outs?+

Yes. Repair call-outs are charged at an £80 call-out fee (credited against any works booked). Storm response and make-safe within 24 hours where possible. We invoice direct or via your insurer.

What about the gutters and downpipes?+

Replaced or cleared as part of every re-roof. We inspect and quote uPVC, cast iron or aluminium options at survey stage.

Do you remove and replace asbestos roofing?+

Asbestos cement (Big-6 sheet, undulating sheet) yes, under HSE notifiable procedure with licensed disposal. Asbestos insulation board (AIB) is handled by a licensed specialist sub-contractor.

Will I need planning permission?+

No for like-for-like recovering. Yes for material change (slate to tile, or vice versa) in conservation areas. We check this on the survey.
